Question by Jdonger: HELP! My computer has the “open with” virus! How do I get rid of it?
I don’t know where this came from, but for some reason, anytime I try to open internet explorer, limewire, or any other file, a window pops up called “open with” with a list of “recomended programs” to start the program with or something.
I’ve read that malewarebytes is good for getting rid of it, but whenever I try to download it, the “open with” box pops up and I can’t use it. What should I do?

  1. Rename the file to 12345.exe. Send it to your desktop where it can be found easily. Then, reboot into safemode.

Follow these steps to proceed once MBAM is accessed:
Click update tab. Check for updates to be installed. After updating is complete, run full scan.

Renaming the program should make it accessible. This type of Virus recognizes MBAM as a threat to its existence. That’s way it will not allow you access.

  2. Try this: Copy the following text in Notepad:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

After that, save the file with the .reg extension (for instance, “FixDrives.reg”). Note that Notepad automatically adds the .txt extension to filenames, so when you save the file, at File Type select All files, to prevent adding the .txt extension.

After that, double-click the file that you just created. It should fix the registry entries that cause this behavior.

Also, after you do the above, check all drives to see if you can find any file named autorun.ini in the root of the drives.
NOTICE: To prevent an infection, in case the autorun.ini files exist, do NOT open the drives by double-click. Instead, open each drive with right-click->Explore. Also, read this topic for a few hints: How To Find Hidden Malware
If you find any autorun.ini files, put one of them in a password-protected ZIP and attach it to this topic. Then remove all autorun.ini files from your computer.
