Question by Russell: Why can’t I remove “internet explorer 8” from windows xp”s “add/remove programs?”?
I want to remove “internet explorer 8” from windows xp”s “add/remove programs” but can’t because their is no “remove” button for it listed. I am having trouble with “redirecting hosts” and have tried using “malwarebytes’ and “spybot search and destroy” but niether could remove it. What should I do?

I believe that cannot be removed – I tried to remove it on Win 7 and it is not possible as it is somehow integrated into the operating system.

  1. It’s something called a Core Program.
Just like the command prompt and the run window, it cannot be removed.
    Thats Microsoft for ya 🙂

  2. Since IE8 didn’t come standard with Windows XP, it’s not a core program. You would have had to upgrade to IE8 along the way somewhere so you can, thus, uninstall it and revert back to IE7.

Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs>On the task pane to the left click “turn windows features on or off” and uncheck IE8

IF you installed IE 8 AFTER you installed SP3, this will work. But if you installed IE8 BEFORE you installed SP3, then you can’t do it untill you uninstall SP3

But in your description here in your question, it sounds to me like you need to get rid of your computer virus, as opposed to doing all of this work to uninstall IE8.

Another alternative would be to try doing a system restore to a date just prior to when this virus took over your IE. Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore then follow the wizard questions

  3. Alternative steps for Windows XP to uninstall IE8 :

To uninstall Internet Explorer 8, follow these steps:
Carefully select and then copy the following command:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type Cmd.exe, and then press ENTER.
Right-click inside the Cmd.exe window, and then click Paste to paste the command that you copied in step 1.
Press ENTER to uninstall Internet Explorer 8.
When the uninstall program is finished, restart your computer.
